The Original Jesse James American Outlaw Bourbon Whiskey

Jesse James, legendary outlaw, legendary bourbon.

The Origins

Though the bourbon is in celebration of Legendary American Outlaw Jesse Woodson James, The bourbons owner and namesake is none other than the front-man to the multi-platinum American rock band Jackyl – Jesse James Dupree.  Jesse James American Outlaw Bourbon is distilled in Kentucky and distributed throughout the midwest

I may be the driving force that makes Jesse James Whiskey available, but it belongs to and is a salute to all of us outlaws who bust our knuckles 40 or 50 hours a week, and like to do things loud, proud hard, and honest.

– Jesse James Dupree

What stood out for me wasn’t the old west trappings on the label but rich amber hue that’s seen through the bottle. While most big-name whiskeys age in char-oak barrels for a couple years before bottling, Jesse James American Outlaw Bourbon is aged for a minimum of 3 years. That extra time in the barrel shows in its burnt caramel color full rich taste…more on that in a minute.

The Nose,

As with any hard spirit, when you first open the bottle you gotta give it a minute otherwise you get a nose full of astringent alcohol vapor.  Get past that when you’ll find Jesse James has a scent of sweet oak and orange rind.

The Taste

So how does it taste? Upon the first sip neat, a warmth spreads from my throat down and enveloping my chest… great for really cold weather because it definitely warms you in a most pleasant glow. What I enjoyed most  was how mellow it was. Drinking it neat there was no burn, just a smooth, matured flavor.  Fruits (sweet), spice and a little vanilla…for those of you keeping score at home.  It has a long finish; the taste lingers a while after the swallow.

The Verdict

The Original Jesse James America’s Outlaw Bourbon Whiskey is pretty damn good.  You can mix it with whatever you want but, to me, this shines best on its own.  To be honest this one took me by surprise.  With it’s rock-n-roll origins and its biker, cowboy, outlaw persona, I was half expecting this to taste like burning diesel but you know, a true American bad-ass would not waste time with shitty rot gut.  This is a superior whiskey worthy of a legend.  If you can find it, get it.
